I had the pleasure of sitting in on a beauty PR webinar lecture on How to Get Press for Your Beauty Brand with Samantha Whittaker of Fresh Image Public Relations. The webinar was hosted by my friend Melody Bockelman, a beauty business consultant.

My agency Bleubird Digital focuses on digital beauty marketing and content strategy, so a reminder on print media was enlightening.

Beauty publicist Samantha Whittaker explained that getting featured in magazines is a transformative process. It increases your brand prestige and has the potential to increase sales due to the degree of coverage. Also, editorial coverage is seven times more effective than advertising and is significantly cheaper.

Get Media Ready

Before approaching a magazine, you need to be ready to receive the media! Samantha Whittaker recommends starting off with your Google Rankings. Media representatives are going to search you on Google. Be prepared to show off our brand with a website presence, blog, or articles on your company.

Make a list of the publications that you imagine being featured in: Essence, Black Enterprises, Allure! Make it as in-depth as you’d like for it to be.

Consider local publications! Get to know those publications backwards and forwards. What do the beauty editors write about? Hair trends? Entrepreneurial stories? Highlight anything that sticks out to you. -Samantha Whittaker

Make a list of the reporters’ names and make note of their writing style! Finally, go back to the publication and look for their editorial calendar.

Samantha’s Tips For When You Reach Out To An Editor

After you’ve researched the print media that you want to be featured in and gotten to know their style, begin developing relationships with the journalist of your preference. 

Figure out your story. You want to get a reporter interested in YOU. Keep things very simple. Understanding your audience is critical in marketing. In this case, journalists are very busy and don’t have time to give more than a cursory look materials.
